Welcome to The Department of Integrative Physiology
The Department of Physiology has been an integral part of the University of Split School of Medicine (USSM) since its establishment in 1997. Since then it has grown into a prominent centre of scientific excellence within the region with a substantial scientific production, developed international ties and a growing number of incoming researchers. The main activities within the Department include basic research and teaching of the medical students and clinical practitioners.
Laboratories for Clinical and Exercise Physiology are equipped with instruments for non-invasive evaluation of cardiopulmonary system in humans at rest and during exercise. They include spiroergometry, ultrasonic scanners with different tissue and vascular probes, respiratory mass spectrometer, transcranial Doppler, various ergometers and different analytical instruments (lactate, blood gas machine, cooximeter, blood count). In addition to the listed methodology, several animal models of cardiovascular disease are being established at the Laboratory for Cellular Physiology that will enable the investigation of the pathological processes at the subcellular and molecular level.
Note: In case you are interested in our teaching activities, please refer to a specialized web page (in Croatian only).

Researchers from our Department visited Cleveland Clinic Foundations where they were hosted by Dr. Mladen Golubic from the Wellness Institute. During the visit to the CCF, Dr. Dujic gave a talk about the activities of the group and all members had a chance to meet a number of experts from the Institute. We were also introduced to the Healthy lifestyle program offered at the Institute named “Lifestyle 180®” which is becoming more and more popular nationwide. The program is headed by Dr. Mike Roizen, who gave us an interesting overview on the main ideas and his vision of the program and offered help in organizing similar kind of activity at the Medical School of the Hospital in Split.

Our visiting professor Hubert V. Forster held a final physiology course lecture to the 2nd year medical students. The topic of the lecture was The Physiological Properties of The Respiratory System. In the second part of his lecture, Professor Forster presented several new insights in central regulation of breathing which resulted from the recent scientific research of his group. Aside from just providing the new information about the respiratory physiology, the lecture served as an excellent example for presenting to students the intensive pace of changes in comprehension of human body function and limitations of textbooks as the only source of knowledge.
Afterwards, Professor Forster participated in our weekly journal club. The center of attention involved one of his recent review articles discussing the latest findings about the influence of peripheral and central chemoreceptors on central regulation of breathing.

Redesigned web pages of our Department are finally operative! It is our idea to use them for presentation of our scientific activities. Additionally, we plan to maintain them only in English thus making them comprehensible to a broader community worldwide. By that we do not only imply scientific community but diving community as well.
Information about our teaching activities at University of Split School of Medicine are still kept in Croatian and presented on specialized web pages.
We sincerely hope that you will enjoy browsing through our web site. In case you wish to leave a feedback please do not hesitate and send an e-mail to our webmaster.
